At DuCo, we work with homeowners and builders to supply and install replacement joinery throughout the Waikato every year.

What we’ve found is that a lot of people are not aware that you can replace existing windows or the benefits of doing so. In this article, we explain what replacement windows are, why you should replace your windows, and how the process works.

What are replacement windows?

Replacing windows is a great way to improve the energy efficiency and functionality of your home or building. There are three options when it comes to replacing windows:

  1. RETRO-FIT WINDOWS

Retro-fit windows are a glass-only replacement in which the existing single glazing is replaced with double glazing. The existing frames remain in place and only certain aluminium frames are suitable for this. If it is possible with your existing aluminium frames, retrofit double glazing is generally the most cost-effective option.

  1. INSERT WINDOWS

Insert windows apply to existing timber frames which are replaced with a new aluminium internal frame. This process also includes new openings and glass but the exterior or perimeter timber framing is left in place. Insert windows allow you to maintain the aesthetics of timber joinery while giving you the smooth operation of new aluminium joinery.

  1. FULL REPLACEMENT WINDOWS

The process of installing full replacement windows involves removing the entire window and replacing it with brand-new aluminium joinery and glazing. This can apply to any type of existing joinery, including timber and aluminium. Full replacement windows give you the ultimate flexibility in configuration and a fresh new look for your home.

Our team is readily available for an onsite consultation and can advise on what is the best method of replacement window for your situation.

Reasons to replace your windows

The most common reasons to replace windows include:

  • Upgrading to double glazing.
  • Eliminating draughts.
  • Renovating for a fresh look and feel.
  • Changing the colour to brighten your interior spaces.
  • Changing the configuration of your windows.
  • Adding or removing doors.

Benefits of replacement windows

Whatever your reason for replacing the existing windows, replacing old joinery with new energy-efficient designs is one of the best investments you can make in your home and will stay with you for many years. There are several benefits:

  1. REGULATE HOME TEMPERATURES

New windows are better at insulating against the cold in winter and the heat in summer. This makes it easier to maintain a comfortable internal temperature without overspending on heating and cooling.

  1. HEALTHIER LIVING CONDITIONS

Double glazing and replacement joinery help to reduce moisture in your home. This makes for healthier living conditions with less mould and condensation.

  1. EXPERIENCE PEACE

In addition to thermal insulation, quality windows also help to insulate against noise. This ensures any internal sounds are kept in and outside commotion is kept out.

  1. DECREASE POWER COSTS

By improving the thermal insulation in your home, replacement windows will result in significant power savings.

  1. IMPROVED FUNCTION/OPERATION OF YOUR JOINERY

New hinges, stays, and locking hardware on your windows and doors will make them easier to operate. This also improves the security of your home.

  1. VISUAL APPEAL

Your joinery has a large impact on the look and feel of your home. You’d be amazed how much difference new joinery has when transforming your space, both indoors and outdoors.

  1. INCREASE YOUR HOUSE VALUE

The above benefits of modernised and high-performing joinery will increase your house value significantly. When you decide to sell your home, potential buyers will be willing to pay more for a comfortable, energy-efficient, and functional home.

How to replace windows

Here at DuCo, we’ve been providing replacement windows for many years. We’ve worked with homeowners and builders on a wide range of projects, including residential and commercial buildings. In that time, we’ve developed a tried and tested process to replace windows effectively, efficiently, and to a high standard.

  1. QUOTE AND PROJECT SCOPE

Firstly, ask our experienced team for an estimate for your project. We will provide details on the key costs and considerations you should make. Next, we will ask you to outline what you need and your key criteria. We will use this to develop a brief and determine the project scope. This can be done via photos and basic measurements, or through a site visit.

Replacement windows do not require building consent but we strongly encourage hiring professionals. This process has a major impact on the weather tightness and long-term durability of your home so it pays to get it right the first time.

  1. ON-SITE CONSULTATION

Next, we will arrange a visit to your site. This onsite consultation will involve more detailed discussions about the project and detailed site measurements. From this, we can confirm the estimate and provide a final quotation.

  1. MANUFACTURING

When you have agreed to the final quotation, we can manufacture the joinery. This is completed in our specialised factory, ensuring high quality and consistent production every time.

  1. WINDOW REPLACEMENT

When the window manufacturing is complete, our installation team will follow our careful installation process:

  1. Remove any existing joinery or glass and dispose of it responsibly.
  2. Prepare the existing openings to ensure they are suitable for the new windows.
  3. Fix the new joinery and/or glazing in place.
  4. If required, complete the installation of external flashings and external trims to ensure the building is watertight.
  5. If required, fix new internal architraves.
  6. Thoroughly clean the workspace, ready for you to enjoy your new windows.
  7. If you need painting, flooring, or decorating, we can recommend local contractors.

At DuCo, our installers and recommended contractors are highly trained and experienced to ensure your new windows are installed accurately and neatly.
