In this article, we discuss what you need to do before, during and after the replacement window install process. We cover preparation, installation, and maintenance to ensure you get the best possible results.

Aluminium window replacement installation - what you need to do

To ensure you get the best possible results with your windows and doors, it pays to know the best practices for preparation, installation, and ongoing maintenance. We’ve outlined our advice for you to follow below.

Preparation

Leading up to your window replacement, the more preparation you can do, the better.  Internally our installers will require a clear work area around the windows & doors, as such any obstructing furniture will need to be moved to the centre of the room and curtains removed.

Externally we will need space for our delivery vehicles to arrive and unload the joinery and possibly space for us to locate a skip bin while we work onsite.

Installation

During the installation phase, our installers or contractors will complete the work for you to ensure safety and the correct technique. This full process is outlined below. This is an exciting stage for you as the homeowner as you will start to see the changes come to life, all we require from you is to give our installers a bit of space so they can work safely!

If for unforeseen reasons, we discover hidden issues with the house structure, such as rotten framing, we will discuss repair options with you before starting any additional work.

Decorating

After your windows have been installed, the frames need to be painted to ensure longevity. While we do not complete this step at DuCo, we can recommend a local contractor that we’ve worked with before. If your curtains were removed for installation, we recommend re-fitting once painting and decorating is complete.

Maintenance

After your windows are installed, we will provide you with valuable resources to care for your new joinery. The DuCo Care Guide has everything you need to know, including helpful warnings, cleaning tips, and warranty information. By following this advice, you can maximise the lifespan of your new DuCo products.

Our window replacement and installation process

With any window installation, our team will follow these key steps.

      1. Remove existing joinery

When we get to your site, we will remove any joinery and glass, disposing of it responsibly.

      2. Prepare the openings

To ensure the openings are suitable for the new windows, we will remove or add any necessary elements to the framing.

      3. Fix the new joinery in place

When the opening is ready, we will fix the new joinery and/or glazing into place.

      4. External flashings

If required, we will install the external flashings and trims to ensure the building is watertight.

      5. Internal architraves

If required, we will fix new internal architraves to achieve a refined, polished finish.

      6. Clean the workspace

After the windows are installed or repaired, we will thoroughly clean the workspace. At this point, we can recommend local contractors to paint the window frames.

How DuCo can help

At DuCo, we work with homeowners and builders to supply and install replacement joinery. Based in Cambridge, we offer three service options — retro glazing, insert windows, and full replacement windows.

Retro glazing

Our team will remove the single glazing and insert new double glazing in its place. This is a cost-effective option to improve insulation but can only be done with suitable existing aluminium windows.

Insert windows

With existing timber windows, we can leave the timber framing in place and replace the internal members with aluminium and new double glazing. This allows you to maintain the authentic timber aesthetic while gaining the smooth operation of aluminium joinery and improved thermal performance.

Full replacement windows

With a full replacement window, we will remove the old window or door and replace it with a brand-new aluminium joinery unit, complete with new glazing. This gives you ultimate flexibility in configuration and a fresh look and feel for your home.

At DuCo, we focus on window replacement and installation, not window repairs. For general repairs and maintenance, we recommend Exceed or Waipa Aluminium.
